Our History

In September 2011, The Rock Christian Center launched its weekly Bible Study on Tuesday nights at the James Lee Community Center in Falls Church, Virginia. On November 6, 2011 the founding members of The Rock Christian Center (Rev. Denise Wilson, Tracey Parris, Malachi Agusto, Elijah Agusto, Davin Wills, Lydia Wills, Janae Strother, Robin Stewart, Anne Bauer, Jameelah Sessoms, Devin Hermon, and Omar Hedgespeth) along with several missionaries, representatives of the Mt. Pleasant Baptist Church official family and a host of friends and family held the inaugural service at 10am, at Jeb Stewart High School in Falls Church, Virginia. Pastor James L. Graham, Jr., Senior Pastor of the Mt. Pleasant Baptist Church preached the service. Under the leadership of the Rev. Dr. Denise Wilson, Senior Pastor, the church embarked on its journey to spread God’s love and Kingdom building in the Falls Church community. Below are highlights from this remarkable journey during the remainder of 2011:

Our theme for 2014 was “The Next Step!” based on Isaiah 43:19a. The focus was not just on personal growth but on taking the next step to grow the ministry and reach the community in meaningful ways. The following are a few highlights from new ministries launched in this phase of our journey:

  • In January, started having our weekly Youth Bible study

  • In May, celebrated our first Family and Friends Day

Our 2015 theme was “Courageous Faith: All Faith, No Fear” based on Joshua 1:9. This theme was both a blessing and a challenge. Based on the progress and growth of The Rock in previous years, we expected the ministry to grow by leaps and bounds in 2015. There was a small degree of progress in that ministries started in previous years such as Bible study, VBS, Youth Church, Homeless Ministry and the Nursery, continued to function. But the challenge was that no new ministries were added and existing ministries did not grow as anticipated. Our faith was truly tested during this period of rest and reflection as we heard God saying “Be still and know that I am God.”

By the end of 2015, we had a clear vision of our mission and direction for 2016. Our theme for 2016 has been “iRock uRock”, returning to our foundation scripture of Matthew 16:18. We have operated under the grace and favor associated with being in our fifth year. We began to grow, adding new members and new ministries to meet the needs of our growing congregation. Significant events thus far in this year include:

  • In February, baptized new believer who was a practicing Moslem for more than 20 years

  • In February, launched our online Bible study

  • Conducted Youth outings throughout the summer to trampoline park, Kings Dominion and other recreational sites

  • In May, participated in an all-day observance of the National Day of Prayer via a conference call prayer line

  • On June 26, ordained two deacons, Deacon Sckeitha “Kiki” Jones and Deacon Troy Mathis

  • On August 7, licensed Angela Newman as a minister of the gospel

We are now preparing our hearts and minds to enter 2017 with a renewed spirit and zeal as we recommit to Transforming the Kingdom One Soul at a Time.
